Done Talking, a veteran of seven races, will participate in its first Grade 1 affair this weekend at the 2012 Kentucky Derby. The Skeedattle Stable product, who required three races to break his maiden, is considered a Kentucky Derby Picks long shot at +3500 Horse Racing Odds. The colt, while lacking in impressive finishes, should be able to handle the distance at Churchill Downs as its last three races have all been 1 1/16 miles or greater.
There is not a lot of Derby talk surrounding Done Talking, and for good reason. The colt has never participated in a Grade 1 race, and it has just one top three finish in its last three races. Done Talking took fourth at the Grade 2 Remsen Stakes last November and it placed a distant 10th at the Gotham Stakes in early March.
Those two results raised doubts about the colt’s chances of landing a spot in the Derby, but punched its Churchill Downs ticket by stunning the field at last month’s Grade 3 Illinois Derby. The Hamilton Smith trained colt took first at the event with a 1:53.88 finish in the 1 1/8 miles prep race.
Done Talking, despite its suspect resume, is not without pedigree as it was sired by Broken Vow, the son of 1990 Kentucky Derby winner Unbridled. Broken Vow enjoyed his best finish at the 1 1/4 miles Gulfstream Handicap in 2001, taking home third place in the Grade 1 race.
Piloting Done Talking in Saturday’s Run for the Roses will be jockey Sheldon Russell. Russell was aboard the colt for its Illinois Derby victory and a first place Allowance run at the Prax at Philadelphia Park. He last guided Eighttofasttocatch to a fourth place finish at the Action Stakes on April 15th at the Aqueduct in Ozone Park, New York.
