The light on results but heavy on pedigree Prospective will attempt to add another prestigious racing title to its rich bloodlines when the 138th running of the Kentucky Derby gets underway on Saturday, May 5th. The son of Malibu Moon is certainly not a Derby favorite, though, as the latest Kentucky Derby Bets have the colt listed at +4500 Horse Racing Odds to win the first leg of the Triple Crown series.
Not much about Prospective’s eight race resume would suggest the colt will emerge from the pack on Saturday to win the coveted blanket of roses. Since breaking his maiden in August of last year, Prospective has earned three wins, taking first in the Grey Stakes last October, the seven furlongs Pasco Stakes in January, and the Grade 2 Tampa Bay Derby in early March. However, the colt has faltered on the biggest of stages, posting less than stellar finishes in its two Grade 1 affairs.
Prospective turned in a dismal 13th place finish at the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile last November and it placed sixth in its most recent outing, the Blue Grass Stakes at Keeneland.
The Mark Casse trained colt has produced its best finishes on dirt, though, and the animal’s pedigree says the distance of the Derby (1 1/4 miles) will not be an issue. Prospective’s dam, Spirited Away, was sired by multiple graded stakes winner Awesome Again, and his sire, Malibu Moon, comes from 1992 Belmont Stakes winner A.P. Indy. A.P. Indy is the son of 1977 Triple Crown winner Seattle Slew.
While lineage is important, it guarantees nothing come race day. Nevertheless, it is, perhaps, a reason to keep Prospective, who will be ridden by Mexico’s Luis Contreras, in mind as a possible long shot.
