Trainer Dale Romans will look to secure his first ever Kentucky Derby win on Saturday with the Even the Score sired Dullahan. The heavily raced colt is a Kentucky Derby Predictions favorite at +700 Horse Racing Odds, but it has just two wins to its credit. Dale Romans nearly tasted Kentucky Derby victory in 2010 Paddy O’Prado finished third behind Super Saver and Ice Box on a sloppy Churchill Downs track. A second opportunity may come this weekend when the affable trainer brings Dullahan to the legendary Louisville track.
While the chestnut colt needed three attempts to break its maiden, it has recorded two wins since doing so. Dullahan only has two dirt races on his resume, but he is no stranger to stiff competition, having competed in one Grade 3, one Grade 2, and three Grade 1 events.
Dullahan, who will start the Derby from post five, placed fourth at the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile last November, but prior to his participation in that Grade 1 affair it took first place at the Breeders’ Futurity (G1). After a heavy 2011 schedule Romans lightened the load for the colt in 2012. Dullahan has competed in just two races since the first of the year, taking second at the 1 1/8 miles, turf based Palm Beach Stakes (G3) in March and first at last month’s Grade 1 Blue Grass Stakes (synthetic).
Hall of Fame jockey Kent Desormeaux, who has been aboard Dullahan for five of the colt’s eight races, will hold the reigns for Romans on Saturday. Desormeaux’s illustrious career includes three Kentucky Derby titles (Real Quiet – 1998, Fusaichi Pegasus – 2000, Big Brown – 2008), two Preakness Stakes titles (Real Quiet – 1998, Big Brown – 2008) and one Belmont Stakes title (Summer Bird – 2009).
