Kentucky Derby 2012 Favorites: One can just about assume, any colt that trainer Bob Baffert has entered in the Kentucky Derby has a good chance of winning. Baffert’s horses have won three times and is again running one of the favorites in Bodemeister. Michael Matz is another former winner, last winning in 2006 with Barbaro. Matz is looking good for 2012 with Derby favorite Union Rags. These two are not the only top colts in the race either. I’ll Have Another is getting plenty of pre-derby hype as well as Creative Cause and Gemologist. These five are the best of the field, but of course we’ve seen upsets like in 2011 with Animal Kingdom, a long-shot at best. Get Free Horse Racing Picks.
Today (Wednesday) at 5 p.m. we will get a clearer picture and might even alter our favorites view after the gate draw.
Jockey Calvin Borel will be looking for Roses his third time in recent years aboard Take Charge Indy. Borel got his first in in 2007 riding Street Sense and rode the rail on Mine That Bird in 2009. Borel has already pulled off a major upset in 2012 riding Take Charge Indy to victory in the Florida Derby ahead of Horse Racing Odds favorite Union Rags. Borel likes to run inside so his odds will be best with a low gate draw.
This year’s race is a wide-open affair. While Bodemeister’s 9 ½ length victory in his final prep race offers reason to tag him as the race favorite, Gemologist is unbeaten in five career races and has a stellar pedigree. Union Rags has looked strong in his works, as has Liaison, who has relished the track at Churchill Downs. Liaison is also trained by Baffert.
