American Pharoah ended a 32-year Triple Crown drought last June, can Nyquist make it a back-to-back Triple Crown affair like Seattle Slew and Affirmed did in 1977 and ’78? That question could be answered, at least in part, on Saturday when the second leg of the series, the Preakness Stakes, takes place at Pimlico Park in Baltimore.
Opening 2016 Preakness Stakes Odds from Bovada.lv like Nyquist to keep his Triple Crown hopes alive, favoring the son of Uncle Mo to win the race at -160 odds ($160 wins $100). Given the colt’s record, there is little reason to doubt its odds.
Nyquist improved to 8-0 with his impressive showing at Churchill Downs, recording the fastest Derby finish since 2003 victor Funny Cide with his 2:01.31 result. The race also marked his fifth Grade 1 win and his third triumph over Exaggerator, who charged his way to a second place finish in the Derby.
Exaggerator is second on Bovada’s Preakness Stakes favorites list, coming into this weekend’s race with a +450 line ($100 wins $450). Were it not for a wide turn down the back stretch at the Derby, Exaggerator could have spoiled Nyquist’s unblemished record.
With fewer horses running at Pimlico, an easier trip is a definite possibility for the colt; however, the same holds true for Nyquist and there will be less time (1 1/4 miles compared to 1 3/16 miles) for Exaggerator to make up any potential distance.
In addition to Nyquist and Exaggerator, Gun Runner is the only other Derby runner competing in the 2016 Preakness Stakes (drawing +1000 odds). Of the fresh faces, Stradivari is viewed as the mostly likely winner with a +900 line.
Stradivari, who is trained by Hall of Famer Todd Pletcher, has just three races under his belt, taking two first place finishes following a fourth place turn in his maiden.
