There will be no Triple Crown bid in the offing at Belmont Park on June 11; however, Exaggerator will look to become the 14th horse to complete a Preakness Stakes/Belmont Stakes double. Horse racing odds from Bovada.lv have the Curlin sired colt listed as a big favorite in the final leg of the Triple Crown Series, lining it as a -110 money line pick in the bookmaker’s latest 2016 Belmont Stakes Odds.
While Nyquist was not as highly regarded as last year’s Triple Crown winner American Pharoah, the colt made an impressive run at the Kentucky Derby to remain undefeated. His performance at Churchill Downs stirred hope among some that back-to-back Triple Crowns was a possibility.
That prospect was, of course, foiled at Pimlico in Baltimore on May 21 as Exaggerator navigated a sloppy track to win the Run for the Black-Eyed Susans. The Preakness marked the fifth time Nyquist and Exaggerator were involved in the same race.
Exaggerator will not have to deal with Nyquist when the Belmont gets underway on Saturday, June 11 in New York, but the second and fourth place Preakness Stakes finishers, Cherry Wine and Stradivari, are in line to run in the final leg of the Triple Crown Series.
Also looking to tame the “Test of the Champion” are Suddenbreakingnews, Destin, Brody’s Cause, Lani, Unified, Mo Tom and Creator. Each of those colts scored a top-10 finish in the Kentucky Derby save Creator (13th) and Unified (did not run in the Derby).
Piloting Exaggerator in the Belmont Stakes, which measures 1 1/2-miles, will, once again, be veteran jockey Kent Desormeaux, who won the Belmont in 2009 aboard Summer Bird. Desormeaux is also a three-time Derby winner and a three-time Preakness Stakes winner.
