Everyone knew going into yesterday’s Belmont Stakes that a Triple Crown was not in the cards, but many felt Orb, the favorite, and Oxbow, a third pick, were good candidates to pull off a Derby/Belmont double or a Preakness/Belmont double. Neither came to fruition, though, as Palace Malice ran his way to a 3 1/4 length win over Preakness Stakes victor Oxbow in the 145th running of the Belmont Stakes. Palace Malice entered the race at 13 to 1 odds and returned $29.60 for every $2.00 wagered on a win. The colt, which set a blistering pace at the Kentucky Derby before fading to a 10th place finish, completed the grueling 1 1/2 miles “Test of the Champion” in 2:30.70. Palace Malice earned Hall of Fame trainer Todd Pletcher his second career Belmont Stakes title while the victory also marked jockey Mike Smith’s second Belmont win (2010 – Drosselmeyer). While Orb did not get the win many anticipated, the colt did finish on the board, notching at third place finish for a $3.90 return on a $2.00 Show bet. Oxbow, as mentioned, took second, returning $9.90 and $6.10 on Place and Show wagers respectively.

Belmont Stakes 2013 Odds

The Triple Crown Series comes to finish later this afternoon with the 145th running of the Belmont Stakes. Post time for today’s race is set for approximately 5:00pm ET; the event will be broadcast live on NBC and the NBC Sports Network. At 1 1/2 miles, the Belmont Stakes is the longest and most grueling of the Triple Crown races, which has earned it the moniker the “Test of the Champion”. Today’s race features a crowded 14 horse field and includes a number of non-Derby and non-Preakness runners; however, the latest Belmont Stakes 2013 Odds are favoring Kentucky Derby winner Orb. The son of Malibu Moon, who is seeking his sixth career win, is drawing a +300 line (risk $100 to win $300). Preakness Stakes winner Oxbow and third place Derby finisher Revolutionary are second picks at +600 odds while Peter Pan Stakes winner Freedom Child is a fourth selection at +800. Joining a trio at +1000 odds is filly Unlimited Budget. The Repole Stables product, which is trained by Hall of Famer Todd Pletcher, is seeking to become just the fourth filly ever to win the Belmont Stakes. The last female horse to win the race was another Pletcher trainee, 2007 champion Rags to Riches.

Oxbow will shoot for a Preakness Stakes/Belmont Stakes double tomorrow afternoon in the 145th running of the Belmont Stakes. The race, which is scheduled to get underway at 5:00pm ET, will be broadcast live on NBC and the NBC Sports Network. While Oxbow is expected to contend in Saturday’s 1 1/2 miles Triple Crown finale, he is not expected to win. The latest Belmont Odds on Oxbow are set at 6 to 1; the favorite to win the race is 2013 Kentucky Derby champion Orb at 5 to 2 odds.

In the week leading up to the Preakness Stakes jockey Gary Stevens said he believed he was “sitting on the right horse with the right style”. Stevens proved prophetic as he rode Oxbow, a 15 to 1 longshot, to a first place finish at Pimlico. Given the colt’s near wire to wire victory at the Preakness and its solid sixth place run in the Kentucky Derby, many are showing it some love on the eve of the Belmont Stakes.

The well raced Oxbow (the Belmont marks its 12th career start) certainly has a championship pedigree coming from multiple graded stakes winner Awesome Again (1998 Breeders’ Cup Classic champion) and now it has a Triple Crown result to go with it. Prior to the Derby, Oxbow had won just two times in nine starts and only one of those came in a graded stakes affair, the Grade 3 Lecomte Stakes in January.

The colt appears to have hit its stride now, though, and should be a factor in tomorrow’s race. Oxbow certainly has the most experienced team with D. Wayne Lukas as trainer and Gary Stevens on the mount. Lukas, who captured his sixth Preakness Stakes title three weeks ago, has produced 22 Belmont starters and four Belmont wins (Tabasco Cat – 1994, Thunder Gulch – 1995, Editor’s Note – 1996, Commendable – 2000). Stevens has three Belmont victories under his belt as he guided Thunder Gulch (1995), Victory Gallop (1998), and Point Given (2001) to wins in the final leg of the Triple Crown Series.

The Triple Crown Series will conclude tomorrow with the 145th running of the Belmont Stakes. Saturday’s race, the longest of the Triple Crown races at 1 1/2 miles, features a $1,000, 000 purse. The Belmont is scheduled to get underway at approximately 5:00pm ET at the Belmont Race Track in Elmont, New York; the race will be carried live on NBC and the NBC Sports Network. The latest Belmont Picks 2013 at Bovada.lv have Kentucky Derby winner Orb listed as a 3 to 1 favorite to win the race. Third place Derby finisher Revolutionary is next at 5 to 1 odds while Preakness Stakes champion Oxbow is third with a 13 to 2 line. The trio of Frac Daddy, Giant Finish, and Midnight Taboo, all non-Derby and Preakness runners, are considered the biggest long-shots in the 14 horse field, coming in at 33 to 1 odds.

Orb, despite a sub 100 Beyer speed rating, was the favorite to win the 2013 Kentucky Derby; the colt did just that, taking first in the Run for the Roses after Post 16 start. It did not live up to Preakness Stakes expectations, though, finishing fourth behind Oxbow, Itsmyluckyday, and Mylute at Pimlico three weekends ago.

Orb’s Preakness run marked his first non first place finish since taking fourth in a 6 1/2 furlongs maiden special weight race last November. The colt, which needed four attempts to break its maiden, had reeled off five straight wins before the Run for the Black-Eyed Susans.

Given Orb’s tremendous distance pedigree, most books and bettors are anticipating a bounce back showing for the colt in the Belmont. Orb’s sire, Malibu Moon, comes from 1992 Belmont champion A.P. Indy, and his dam, Lady Liberty, is a product of 1990 Kentucky Derby winner Unbridled.
