Minnesota Vikings 2013 Super Bowl Odds

vikings petersonMinnesota, after disastrous 2010 and 2011 campaigns, was viewed as a postseason long shot (opened the season at +30000 Super Bowl Odds), but Leslie Frazier’s troops will, indeed, suit up in this weekend’s NFC Wild Card round. Still, the Vikings are not expected to make it past the opening round of the playoffs; Adrian Peterson and company are a +310 pick ($100 wins $310) to knock off the Packers on Saturday and a +7500 play to win the Lombardi Trophy in the latest Super Bowl Predictions from Sportsbook.ag.

Leslie Frazier’s first two seasons as head coach of the Vikings were not good with the team posting a miserable 9-23 record. That run, coupled with Adrian Peterson’s late season ACL tear, had almost everyone — fans, pundits, odds makers — expecting another poor showing from Minnesota this year.

The Vikings, along with Peterson, were a major surprise, though. Minnesota jumped out to a 4-1 start and it overcame a 2-5 mid-season lull by winning its last four games to finish 10-6 overall. Peterson not only stunned with his quick recovery (it was beyond impressive that he was ready to play at the start of the season), but he produced a jaw dropping level. The Oklahoma product rushed for a career high 2097 yards (nine short of Eric Dickerson’s single season rushing record) at a career best 6.0 yards per clip, propelling the Vikings otherwise pedestrian offense to a 23.7 point per game average.

While Minnesota is a nice story, it is still a huge Super Bowl gamble. Second year quarterback Christian Ponder is hardly a fear inducing presence under center and the Vikings once dominant defense is now a middle-of-the-pack unit that has a number of ugly performances on its 2012 resume.
