This season’s biggest surprise was, without question, the turnaround of the Indianapolis Colts. Indianapolis won just two games last year without Peyton Manning under center and, while many were excited about Andrew Luck’s potential, few believed the team could find its way back to the playoffs with Manning suiting up for Denver. The Colts did qualify for the playoffs, though, finishing the season with an 11-5 record. However, now that the Colts are in the postseason, they are still viewed as a Lombardi long shot, drawing +4000 odds to win the AFC Championship and +8000 to win the Super Bowl according to the latest Super Bowl Predictions.
The Colts 1-2 start, which included a double digit loss at Chicago and a home setback to the lowly Jaguars, suggested they could be in for another difficult campaign. But that did not prove the case as Indy managed to win 10 of its next 13 games to complete a stunning nine game swing from last year to this year.
The Colts orchestrated their turnaround despite giving up an average of 24.2 points and 387 yards per game and a -12 turnover margin. Those numbers are why many doubt Indianapolis ability to advance what has been a magical season beyond this weekend’s meeting with Baltimore (seven point road dog).
Indy’s suspect defense, poor road play, and penchant for turning the ball over are not the only reasons for its long Super Bowl odds, though. The Colts feasted mostly upon losing teams this year and they did not defeat a single winning team outside the confines of Lucas Oil Stadium.
