Seattle was a bit of a question mark entering the season with a most people high on its defense but uncertain about the offense. The Seahawks answered all questions in emphatic fashion, finishing 11-5 and playing as well as any team in the league down the stretch. Seattle’s late surge has made it one of the favorites to win the NFC Championship (+300) and a top six choice to win the Lombardi Trophy according to the latest Super Bowl Predictions.
Seattle had an uneven start to its season, showing tremendous home chops (beat Dallas, Green Bay, and New England at CenturyLink Field) but an inability to thrive on the road (lost away games at Arizona, St. Louis, San Francisco, and Detroit). The Seahawks home/road dichotomy led to 4-4 record in the season’s first half.
Pete Carroll’s crew rectified almost all of its issues in the final eight games of the season, cruising to a 7-1 record while earning double digit wins over fellow playoff squad in Minnesota and San Francisco.
Seattle’s tough as nails defense (306.2 yards and 15.3 points per game allowed), obviously, played a huge role in the team’s success both early and late. Only one team scored more than 20 points on the Seahawks in their final eight games and its last five opponents averaged a meager 12 points per game.
The offense came on as well with rookie quarterback Russell Wilson improving as the season advanced. Wilson compiled a superb 121.9 quarterback rating in November and December after throwing 16 touchdowns to just two interceptions and completing almost 68 percent of his passes. Wilson’s improvement led to a 34 point per game average for the Seahawks over the team’s final eight games.
With Seattle no longer just a defensive threat or a home only squad, both the odds makers and betting public are starting to get on board Pete Carroll’s Super Bowl bandwagon. It should be noted it is a pretty nice looking wagon, especially at +900 odds.
