The Washington Redskins, another surprise playoff participant, has plenty of juice entering the postseason, but the odds makers are not convinced Mike Shanahan is leading a Super Bowl caliber team. The Redskins, who opened the season as a +75oo Super Bowl pick, are drawing +2000 odds to capture the franchise’s fourth Lombardi Trophy in the latest Super Bowl Predictions.
There was hope when Mike Shanahan took over a Redskins coach in 2010 that he would lead the franchise back to the playoffs sooner rather than later. Washington amassed just 11 wins in Shanahan’s first two seasons, though, prompting many to speculate that Daniel Snyder’s oft used axe would make another appearance should the team suffer through a losing 2012.
Enter Robert Griffin III, the coveted Heisman winner that Washington traded up to get in April’s draft. Some had their doubts about Griffin’s ability to thrive at the NFL level, but Shanahan was not among those as he hitched his Redskins’ wagon to the speedy, big armed Baylor product.
Griffin did right by Shanahan, leading Washington to a 10-6 record and NFC East title. The Redskins won just three of their first nine games, but they reeled off seven straight to finish the season, securing their first postseason berth since 2007 in the process.
Despite its extended winning streak and Shanahan’s past playoff successes, Washington is not expected to advance that far in the postseason. In fact, the Redskins are presently listed as a three point home underdog in this weekend’s Wild Card meeting with the Seahawks.
