49ers vs Panthers Point Spread 2014 NFL Playoff Prediction

by Tyler Morgan on Tuesday, January 7th, 2014

carolina-panthers-cam-newtonSunday’s NFL Divisional Playoff action gets underway at 1:05pm ET in Charlotte, North Carolina as the second seeded Panthers play host to the fifth seeded 49ers at Bank of America Stadium (FOX). The opening 2014 NFL Playoff Prediction point spread on the much anticipated showdown has the visiting 49ers listed as a -2 favorite; the NFL Odds game total is set at 42.5 points. Carolina is drawing a +115 money line ($100 wins $115) to advance to the NFC Championship Game while San Francisco is a -135 money line selection ($135 wins $100).

San Francisco 49ers vs Carolina Panthers Odds (+2, Over/Under 42.5): The Panthers had some huge wins this season, beating teams like New England and New Orleans, but their November 10th win at San Francisco was, no doubt, the biggest feather in their cap. Carolina, playing as a 6.5 point road dog, knocked off the Niners 10-9 at Candlestick after turning in one of the better defensive performances of 2013. The 49ers managed all of 10 first downs and 151 total yards while averaging a truly pathetic 2.9 yards per play.

San Francisco has probably been itching for a rematch ever since and it will get it on Sunday. Despite the result of the first meeting, the Niners have to like their chances this time around. Jim Harbaugh’s troops held a 9-0 lead in the second quarter and they were up by two points until the 10 minute mark of the fourth quarter thanks to their own strong defensive showing. The Panthers posted 15 first downs, 250 total yards, and averaged 3.8 yards per play as Cam Newton completed 16-of-32 passes for 169 yards and one interception and rushed for 15 yards on eight carries.

For whatever the reason, though, Carolina, which is riding a seven game home winning streak, has had San Francisco’s number. The Panthers are 8-2 in their last 10 meetings with the 49ers and they covered the spread in nine of those 10 games. Carolina is also 15-3 against the spread in the 18 games between these two franchises.
