The NFC’s top two seeds, the San Francisco 49ers and Atlanta Falcons, will meet this Sunday at the Georgia Dome for the right to play in Super Bowl XLVII. The 2013 NFC Championship Game is scheduled to get underway at 3:00pm ET on FOX. The NFL Point Spreads have the Niners listed as a -3.5 against the spread road favorite and the game total set at 48.5 points.
San Francisco reached its second consecutive NFC Championship Game with a dominating Divisional round win over the Packers. The Niners beat Green Bay 45-31 at Candlestick Park behind the strength of an incredible offensive performance.
Jim Harbaugh’s troops finished the game with 29 first downs and a stunning 579 total yards. San Francisco, which converted 8-of-13 on third down, possessed the ball for 38:01 after rushing for 323 yards on 43 carries. Second year quarterback Colin Kaepernick spurred the onslaught, throwing for 263 yards and two touchdowns while rushing for a quarterback record 181 yards on 16 carries. Kaepernick also accounted for two rushing scores as well.
Atlanta’s win looked vastly different and far more dramatic as it needed a 49 yard field goal from Matt Bryant with eight seconds left in regulation to secure a 30-28 win over the Seahawks. The Falcons were up 27-7 late in the third quarter, but three unanswered touchdowns from Seattle in the fourth gave Russell Wilson and company a 28-27 lead with 31 seconds remaining.
Atlanta’s unlikely late recovery was a surprise of sorts, but not necessarily shocking. The Falcons won a number of close games this season, particularly at home, and they secured a eerily similar 30-28 Georgia Dome win over the Panthers earlier in the season.
Despite Atlanta’s home track record, the odds makers are in the Niners camp. There are probably a handful of reasons for that, but chief among them is San Francisco’s perceived ability to create numerous mismatches on offense. Kaepernick’s divisional outing gave the 49ers a look that would, seemingly, give the Falcons’ mediocre defense fits.
