The top two seeds in the AFC, Denver and New England, will battle for the conference championship on Sunday, January 24 (3:05pm ET, CBS). The game will not only send one of the two onto Super Bowl 50, it could represent the conclusion of what has been both a storied and lopsided rivalry between Tom Brady and Peyton Manning.
Opening Patriots vs Broncos 2016 AFC Championship Game odds from Bovada.lv point toward another Lombardi bid for New England. The Pats are lined as a -3.5 road favorite over Manning and the Broncos while the game total is coming in at 44 points.
Sunday’s game will mark the second meeting of the season between New England and Denver as the two squads meet at Sports Authority Field on November 30. The Broncos, playing without Manning, prevailed 30-24 in overtime in spite of trailing 14-0 in the second quarter.
Denver amassed 433 total yards, 179 of which came on the ground, while limiting the Patriots to 301 yards. Brady completed 23-of-42 passes for 280 yards; he also threw three touchdown passes in the loss, connecting with Rob Gronkowski, Brandon Bolden and Scott Chandler.
The setback dropped Brady’s career record to 2-6 in Denver. However, New England fans can, perhaps, take solace in the fact that Manning will be under center for the Broncos this time around.
Manning is, of course, a shell of his former self in terms of physical ability and his record opposite Brady is a forgettable one. The Patriots are 10-5 against Manning with Brady on the field. Although, the Manning led Broncos did get the better of the most recent contest with Denver defeating New England 26-16 in the 2014 AFC Championship Game.
Denver is 1-5 both straight up and against the spread in its last six games playing as an underdog coming off a home win (record dates back to December 18, 2011).
New England is 4-2 straight up but just 1-5 against the spread in its last six games playing as a road favorite of -3 or more when coming off a home win.
