Super Bowl 50 MVP Odds

super bowl 50 mvp oddsSuper Bowl 50 is three days away and the odds makers expect the Panthers to hoist the Lombardi Trophy when the dust settles at Levi’s Stadium on Sunday night. Carolina is lined as a -6 favorite at and its quarterback, Cam Newton, is the Super Bowl 50 MVP frontrunner at -125 odds. Peyton Manning, the Super Bowl XLI MVP, is the offshore bookmaker’s second choice at +290.

Newton is, of course the obvious choice, given his unbelievable regular season performance as well as his play in Carolina’s playoff wins over Seattle and Arizona. The Auburn product, who guided the Panthers to a 15-1 record, threw for 3837 yards and 35 touchdowns while putting together a career best 99.4 passer rating. He also rushed for 636 yards and 10 touchdowns.

Newton continued his incredible play against the Seahawks and Cardinals, completing 35-of-50 passes for 496 yards and three touchdowns. Newton, who threw for an average of 9.92 yards per pass in the two wins, also logged two rushing scores.

While Manning is a living football legend, his presence near the top of the Super Bowl MVP odds board may have some scratching their heads. The five-time MVP winner has fought his way through some well documented struggles this year and his season numbers reflect as much (67.9 passer rating, 2249 yards, nine touchdowns, 17 interceptions). However, the fact that he is a quarterback gives him a tremendous advantage in the MVP race.

Quarterbacks have won Super Bowl MVP honors 27 times while running backs have produced just seven MVP awards as the next closest position.

The odds makers, however, are anticipating some strong MVP bids from the defensive side of the ball on Sunday. Linebackers Luke Kuechly and Von Miller are directly behind Manning on Bovada’s list at +1200 odds apiece. Kuechly, the 2013 NFL Defensive Player of the Year, produced a pick-six interception in each of the Panthers two playoff wins while Miller logged 2.5 sacks and an interception in helping Denver defeat the Steelers and Patriots.
