The NFL announced today that the 2012 season will open on Wednesday, September 5th with a battle between NFC East rivals Dallas and New York at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. NFL odds makers at BetOnline.com wasted no time posting a line on the 2012 NFL Season Opener, making the defending Super Bowl champion Giants a -3.5 against the spread home favorite.
It seems as though the dust has barely settled on New York’s 21-17 win over the Patriots in Super Bowl XLVI, but today the NFL tossed out one of its many reminders that a new season will be upon us in a few short months.
The league made it known that the Giants, last year’s NFC East winner with a 9-7 record, will host the Cowboys on Wednesday, September 5th to open the 2012 schedule. That news should have be music to the ears of Eli Manning and company as they have had their way with Dallas in recent seasons.
New York bested the Pokes twice last season, beating them 37-34 in Dallas on December 11th before throttling them 31-14 at the Meadowlands in the regular season finale. Manning threw for 746 yards and five touchdowns in the two victories. Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo played well in defeat (except for the now infamous miss of a wide open Miles Austin in the first meeting), throwing for 610 yards and six touchdowns.
New York, a winner in five of its last six against Dallas, is, shockingly, just 4-6 both straight up and against the spread in its last 10 games as a home favorite with a spread between 0 and 3.5 points. While that news may be discouraging to Giants fans, they can take heart in the fact that Dallas is the same 4-6 in its last 10 games as a road dog with a point spread between 0 and 3.5.
