The 2013 NFL Monday Night Football slate kicks off with an NFC East clash between the Philadelphia Eagles and Washington Redskins on September 9th at FedEX Field. The game is scheduled to get underway at 7:00pm ET on ESPN; it will precede the second half of a special Monday night double-header between Texans and Chargers in San Diego. Washington, a surprise playoff team last season, is lined as a -4.5 against the spread home favorite in Sportsbook.ag’s recently released 2013 NFL Week 1 Spread. The Over/Under for the divisional battle is presently set at 51 points.
Philadelphia endured a disastrous 4-12 season last year, leading to the dismissal of longtime Head Coach Andy Reid. Stepping in for Reid is former Oregon head coach Chip Kelly. Kelly has long been regarded as one of the great offensive minds in football, but many have questioned whether or not his read-option, fast-break system will work in the NFL.
Michael Vick’s ability to run the ball would seemingly make him the best fit for Kelly’s offensive approach, but his turnover issues could force Kelly to take a long look at second year pro Nick Foles. At this juncture, Kelly has yet to name the starting quarterback, which points to all options being on the table.
Washington, which came out of nowhere to win the NFC East last year, has a quarterback issue of its own; however, the Redskins problem is of an entirely different nature. Robert Griffin III exploded on the scene last year, throwing for 3,200 yards and 20 touchdowns while also rushing for 815 yards and seven scores on 120 attempts. He is Washington’s starting quarterback, but Griffin is still rehabbing from a playoff knee injury and subsequent surgery, leaving his availability for the season opener very much in doubt.
If Griffin is unable to go, field general duties will fall to Kirk Cousins, who also enjoyed a nice rookie campaign last year, throwing for 466 yards and four touchdowns (101.6 passer rating) in limited action.
The Eagles lost both games against Washington a season ago, but prior to those two setbacks Philly had won five of six against the Redskins, including three in a row at FedEX Field.
