The Seattle Seahawks, who came up three points shy of an NFC Championship Game appearance last season, will open their 2013 schedule against the Carolina Panthers. The two NFC rivals are scheduled to kick things off at 1:00pm ET on September 8th at the Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte. The latest 2013 NFL Week 1 Spread from Carbon Sports on this game has the visiting Seahawks listed as a -3.5 against the spread favorite and the Over/Under set at 45 points.
The Seahawks were one of the league’s biggest surprises last year as they nearly won the NFC West with an 11-5 record. While Seattle did come up short of its bid for a division title, it still reached the playoffs thanks to its 7-1 closing run.
One of the Seahawks three regular season road wins came against the Panthers at Bank of America Stadium on October 7th. Seattle turned the ball over three times, but it still managed to earn a 35:46 to 24:14 time of possession advantage over Carolina in the 16-12 victory. The Seahawks defense held the Panthers to 13 first downs and 190 total yards as Cam Newton completed just 12 of his 29 passes for 141 yards (56.8 passer rating).
While the Panthers look like an upcoming team (won five of their last six games a season ago), Seattle officially arrived last year. The Seahawks defense is, arguably, the best in the league, and its offense, under the direction of Russell Wilson, grew into a formidable force mid-way through the team’s 2012 campaign.
Carolina did earn a couple of nice home wins last year, topping division rivals New Orleans and Atlanta in Charlotte, but this line seems about right given where these two clubs are in the development process.
Notes: The Over is 6-1 in the Panthers last seven games as a home underdog. The Seahawks are 3-1 straight up and 4-0 against the spread in their last four road games (includes last year’s playoffs).
