The revamped Cleveland Browns will open their 2013 schedule at home on Sunday, September 8th opposite the Miami Dolphins. The two AFC squads are scheduled to begin play at 1:00pm ET; the game will be broadcast live on CBS. Early 2013 NFL Week 1 odds from offshore bookmaker Sportsbook.ag have the visiting Dolphins listed as a -1 against the spread favorite and the Over/Under set at 39.5 points.
The Browns are yet another NFL team that went through an offseason make-over after last season’s 5-11 finish. Cleveland’s new owner, Jimmy Haslan, dumped general manager Mike Holmgren and his coaching hire, Pat Shurmur, and brought in former Browns offensive coordinator Rod Chudzinski to serve as head coach. The Browns also hired offensive guru Norv Turner, who lost his job in San Diego, to serve as Chudzinski’s play caller.
The pair have some potential young weapons in running back Trent Richardson, receiver Josh Gordon, and tight end Jordan Cameron, but this team, which averaged 314.3 yards and 18.9 points per game a season ago has a long ways to go.
Miami, which finished 7-9 last year under first year head coach Joe Philbin, should serve as a good test for the Browns new coaching staff. The Dolphins went just 2-6 on the road last season; however, their away schedule featured five playoff teams in Houston, Cincinnati, Indianapolis, San Francisco, and New England.
Miami’s offense went through some growing pains last year with rookie quarterback Ryan Tannehill at the helm of a group playing in a new system. If Tannehill progresses, the offense, which added some really nice pieces in receivers Mike Wallace and Brandon Gibson as well as tight end Dustin Keller, should take a big step forward.
The Dolphins defense was the team’s strength in 2012, ranking in the top 10 in both points allowed (19.8) and sacks (42). It should, in theory, have an advantage of Cleveland’s offense when these two teams collide in week one.
