Playing in the same division always creates a rivalry between teams, but the growing animosity between the San Francisco 49ers and Seattle Seattle exceeds even divisional bounds. A great deal of current friction has to do with head coaches Jim Harbaugh and Pete Carroll, who never really got along when they were roaming the sidelines of Stanford and USC, respectively. And, of course, both squads are really good, which means they are fighting for all the same things. Thankfully fans will not have to wait long for these two juggernauts to butt heads on the gridiron as they are scheduled to meet at CenturyLink Field in Seattle on Sunday, September 15th. Sportsbook.ag has made the 2013 NFL Week 2 clash one of its NFL Games of the Year; the early 49ers vs Seahawks line at the offshore bookmaker has Seattle listed as a -2.5 against the spread home favorite.
San Francisco registered its second consecutive division title last year, but it did so by the skin of its teeth. The Niners finished up the year with an 11-4-1 record, giving them a half game edge on the Seahawks, who tallied 11 wins and five losses. The difference proved to be a week ten 24-24 tie between San Francisco and St. Louis as the 49ers and Seahawks split their two head to head meetings.
San Francisco won its fourth straight game over Seattle in week seven, beating the Seahawks 13-6 at Candlestick Park. The Niners defense limited Russell Wilson and company to 13 first downs and 251 total yards in the win. The Seahawks exacted some revenge in the second meeting between the two teams, though.
Seattle pounded San Francisco 42-13 when the two rivals hooked up at CenturyLink Field, forcing two turnovers (scored on a blocked field goal) and rushing for 176 yards on 39 carries. Wilson also out-dueled his San Francisco counterpart, Colin Kaepernick, in the lopsided affair, completing 15-of-21 passes for 171 yards and four touchdowns (115.3 passer rating).
While the Niners are favored to win the NFC West (+100 odds) and the 2014 NFC Championship (+350 odds), they are not favored in Seattle, and for good reason. The Seahawks are 10-1 in their last 11 home games, and they were a perfect 8-0 at CenturyLink Field last season, beating visiting opposition by an average of 18.5 points per game.
NFL Week 2 Betting Trend: The Niners are 2-8 both straight up and against the spread in their last 10 games as a road dog with a spread between 0 and 3.5 points.
