2012 NFL Schedule Preseason Week 1

by Matt Foust on Wednesday, August 8th, 2012

nfl logo 3dThe 2012 NFL Preseason opened on Sunday with a clash between the Arizona Cardinals and New Orleans Saints in the annual Hall of Fame game; the action kicks into full swing this week, though, as all 32 teams will take the field between Thursday, August 9th and Monday, August 13th. The 2012 NFL Schedule Preseason Week 1 is highlighted by a nationally televised contest (ESPN) on Thursday evening between the Packers and Chargers as well as Andrew Luck’s NFL debut when the Colts host the Rams at Lucas Oil Stadium on Sunday night (NFL Network). NFL Odds have San Diego and St. Louis listed as -1 against the spread favorites in those two games.

Green Bay Packers (+1) vs San Diego Chargers: While this game holds no real significance, it will provide Green Bay an opportunity to purge the ill feelings from the last time it took the field, which, of course, came in January when the Packers lost 37-20 to the Giants in a divisional playoff game at Lambeau. Aside from that, it should resemble a typical first preseason outing with the starters, including Aaron Rodgers, giving way to the second and third stringers after series or two. Green Bay, which drafted defensive players with its first six picks in April’s draft, might go to the youngsters even sooner than normal as it has 19 players, including starters Jermichael Finley and Greg Jennings, listed on its injury report. For San Diego this game represents its first chance to see a number of new players in game action. The Chargers experienced a tremendous amount of roster turnover in the off-season as long tenured players like Marcus McNeill, Kris Dielman, and Vincent Jackson either retired or signed with new clubs.

St. Louis Rams (-1) vs Indianapolis Colts: Few rookies are guaranteed a starting spot, particularly first year quarterbacks, but Andrew Luck is the exception to the rule. Even before the Colts drafted the much ballyhooed Stanford Cardinal, the torch was being passed from Peyton Manning. Now an anxious Indy fan base and NFL fans everywhere will get to see, if only for a bit, what all the fuss was about. Joining Luck in his Colts debut are nine other draft picks and 11 free agent acquisitions. St. Louis will also feature a new look as Jeff Fisher takes the sideline for the first time as Head Coach of the Rams. While Fisher has his work cut out for him in transforming the Rams into a winner, the team will get a glimpse of a brighter future as its exciting rookie crop, including defensive tackle Michael Brockers, wide receiver Brian Quick, cornerback Janoris Jenkins, and running back Isaiah Pead, takes the field for the first time.
