NFL Preseason action picks up the pace as 12 teams will lock horns tonight, including Washington and Buffalo and Denver and Chicago. Those two games provide particular intrigue, something not typically associated with exhibition football, as Heisman winner Robert Griffin III makes his Redskins debut and Peyton Manning dons a Broncos jersey for the first time in live game action. The latest NFL Odds have Washington listed as a -1 against the spread road favorite in its meeting with the Bills while Denver is a +1 against the spread road dog against the Bears. The Over/Under game total is set at 34.5 points in both preseason contests.
Washington Redskins vs Buffalo Bills (+1): Both Mike Shanahan and Chan Gailey begin their third season with their respective clubs this year, and both coaches may be feeling the heat as Shanahan has compiled a 11-21 record at Washington while Gailey is 10-22 in two season with the Bills. Fortunately for Shanahan, he may have a savior in second overall pick Robert Griffin III, who makes his NFL debut in tonight’s game. RGIII, who threw for 4293 yards and 37 touchdowns at Baylor last season, has generated as much buzz as first overall pick Andrew Luck and, by all accounts, he has excelled in his off-season work with the Redskins. He is scheduled to play around 20 plays this evening and he will do so behind a make-shift offensive line.
Denver Broncos vs Chicago Bears (-1): While fans and pundits alike are anxious to see Luck and Griffin III for the first time, the two rookies are taking a back seat to four time MVP Peyton Manning, who sat out the entire 2011 season due to nerve damage in his neck and throwing arm. Not only is Manning returning to the field, he is doing so with a different team. Denver outbid several suitors for Manning’s services this spring, and many feel his presence will transform the Broncos, last year’s AFC West winner, into a Super Bowl contender. Certainly tonight will shed little light on whether or not those prognostications prove accurate; however, it will provide the first glimpse of the new Manning and where he is at from an arm strength stand point.
It should also be noted that the line moved in this game from 2.5 to 1 after Denver Head Coach John Fox revealed his starters, including Manning, would probably play two series in tonight’s contest.
