2012 NFL Spreads Preseason Week 1

by Tyler Morgan on Friday, August 10th, 2012

niners smith touchdownThe first wave of NFL preseason action came last night as 12 teams took the field, including the Washington Redskins, Green Bay Packers, New England Patriots, and Denver Broncos. Round two comes this evening with six more exhibition contests. First up is an NFL Network match-up between the New York Jets and Cincinnati Bengals; the action will conclude with a showdown between the Vikings and 49ers at Candlestick Park in San Francisco. 2012 NFL Spreads Preseason Week 1 have the Jets/Bengals game listed as Pick’em while the latest NFL Odds show the Niners as a -3 against the spread home favorite in their meeting with Minnesota.

New York Jets vs Cincinnati Bengals (Pick’em): The world cannot seem to get enough of Tim Tebow, which means tonight’s exhibition scrap between the Jets and Bengals should generate an uncharacteristic and undeserved amount of attention. New York fans will get to see Tebow in a Jets uniform for the first time, but it should be noted, he is the backup. Mark Sanchez will get the start and, according to Head Coach Rex Ryan, will play about a quarter this evening. Ryan indicated Tebow could play up to two quarters in relief of Sanchez. Both passers could be thin on targets with receivers Santonio Holmes, Jeremy Kerley, and Chaz Schilens all nursing injuries.

Minnesota Vikings vs San Francisco 49ers (-3): San Francisco takes the field for the first time since its NFC Championship Game loss to the 49ers, and it does so with big expectations, not necessarily for tonight, but for the season. The 49ers, who field, arguably, the league’s best defense, are considered a Super Bowl contender and a prohibitive favorite to retain their NFC West title. This evening’s contest should prove interesting, even for a preseason game, as Jim Harbaugh, who guided the Niners to a 2-2 exhibition record last season, examines several new offensive pieces. San Francisco added receivers Randy Moss, Mario Manningham, and AJ Jenkins (rookie – Illinois) in the off-season as well as running backs Brandon Jacobs and LaMichael James.
