The first week of NFL preseason action is nearly over as just four games remain on the week 1 docket. Two of those contests will take place tonight as the Houston Texans square off against the Carolina Panthers and the Tennessee Titans meet the Seattle Seahawks. Both games will be broadcast live on the NFL Network; the Texans and Panthers are slated to kickoff at 7:00pm ET while the Titans at Seahawks skirmish is scheduled for a 10:00pm ET start. 2012 NFL Predictions Preseason Week 1 and the latest NFL Odds have the home team favored in each game. Carolina and Seattle are both listed as -3 against the spread favorites.
Houston Texans vs. Carolina Panthers (-3): The Texans are one of this year’s sexy picks to represent the AFC in Super Bowl XLVII; however, in order for the club to do that, it will need to stay healthy. Houston already appears banged up heading into its first preseason game as Brian Cushing, Andre Johnson, Jared Crick, Keyaron Fox, Jonathan Joseph, and J.J. Watt are all dealing with injuries. On a positive note, quarterback Matt Schaub has recovered from the foot injury that sidelined him last season and will play 12 to 15 snaps with the rest of the Texans starters in tonight’s game. While no one outside of Carolina is talking Super Bowl in regard to the Panthers, the club is considered an up and coming one. Tonight will reveal little about where the Panthers are headed in 2012, but it will provide a glimpse of any progression last season’s Rookie of the Year, Cam Newton, made over the off-season.
Tennessee Titans vs. Seattle Seahawks (-3): There are several intriguing story lines in this contest, especially for an exhibition game. Tennessee has yet to decide on a quarterback as former Seahawk Matt Hasselbeck and last year’s first round pick, Jake Locker, find themselves mired in a battle for the top spot. Hasselbeck will get the start this evening; he is scheduled to play around 15 snaps (per Head Coach Mike Munchak) before giving way to Locker. On the Seattle front, Matt Flynn, who the club acquired via free agency, and rookie Russell Wilson are scheduled to make their team debuts. Pete Carroll has indicated Flynn and Wilson will take all the snap in tonight’s game, an ominous sign, indeed, for last year’s starter Tarvaris Jackson. Terrell Owens and Braylon Edwards could also see action for the first time as Seahawks.
