The Atlanta Falcons hit the road for Houston to take on the Texans, Saturday August 16th, in Week 2 of the 2014 NFL preseason. The Falcons won their preseason home opener over Miami, while the Texans left off where they were last season, getting shutout in Arizona. For a team that couldn’t muster up any offense, sportsbook Bovada strangely has the Texans as -2.5 point home favorites over the Falcons with the point total set at 40. The Falcons had a miserable season last year going 4-12 for third place in the NFC South, while the Texans finished worse at 2-14, which was the worst record in the NFL. Below is my Tennessee vs New Orleans preview and all Week 2 NFL Preseason Odds courtesy of Bovada.
The Falcons (1-0, 0-0 V) held off the Miami Dolphins 16-10 on Friday night in the preseason opener for both teams. QB Matt Ryan was strong completing each of his seven attempts for 53 yards on Atlanta’s opening drive. Jacquizz Rodgers capped the drive with a 2-yard scoring run. Rodgers started as Steven Jackson continued to recover from a left hamstring injury. Ryan completed passes of 17 yards to Harry Douglas and 5 and 12 yards to Roddy White on the drive.
“We were able to run the ball pretty effectively, and when we did have the opportunity to throw, we were able to move the chains,” Ryan said. “We were able to overcome a couple of penalties, we were able to keep going, and punch the ball into the end zone.”
Roddy White promised that he and Julio Jones would regain the title as the NFL’s top wideout duo, Jones this week went a step farther. Jones reportedly has been “spectacular” in camp, while a healthy White proved he still had it down the stretch last year by averaging 8.6 receptions and 100.4 yards over Atlanta’s final five games.
With Tony Gonzalez eliminated from the offense, the Falcons are a candidate to lead the NFL in three-receiver sets. I wouldn’t be stunned to see Jones and White do exactly what they plan to do.
The Texans (0-1, 0-0 H) lost badly to Arizona 0-32 on Saturday night. Ryan Fitzpatrick had a rough first game as Houston’s quarterback. Playing the entire first half, he completed 6 of 14 passes for 55 yards with two interceptions as the Cardinals took a 20-0 lead at the break. Case Keenum, 0-8 as a starter for Houston last season, played the third quarter, going 3 of 5 for 23 yards.
Houston was without wide receiver Andre Johnson, running back Arian Foster and cornerback Johnathan Joseph — all nursing minor injuries.
The Texans, coming off a 2-14 season, got inside the Cardinals’ 30-yard line once, and that ended with an interception.
“Tonight was not a good night of football,” O’Brien said. “It all starts with me. I’ve got to do a better job of coaching this team. … It’s the first preseason game and there’s nowhere but up from where we are right now.”
