Tomorrow’s NFL preseason slate features a number of top tier teams, clubs most expect to make the playoffs and, perhaps, push for a Super Bowl championship. First up is a match up between city rivals and co-tenants, the Giants and Jets. The two Big Apple brothers are scheduled to kickoff at 7:00pm ET on the NFL Network; the latest NFL Odds have the contest, which the Jets are hosting, listed as a pick’em. The second exhibition attention grabber takes place in the Lone Star State as two Super Bowl favorites, San Francisco and Houston, tussle at Reliant Stadium. The Texans are listed as a -3 against the spread home favorite in their meeting with the Niners.
New York Giants vs New York Jets (Pick): There are few question marks on the Jets defense, but their offense is another story. New York only added to the list of concerns on that side of the ball last week in Cincinnati, totaling 11 first downs and 173 yards in a 17-6 loss to the Bengals. Mark Sanchez looked like his usual pedestrian self (completed 4-of-6 passes for 21 yards) while Tim Tebow crashed and burned in his Jets debut. Tebow rushed for 34 yards on four carries, but he completed just 4-of-8 passes for 27 yards and one interception. Head Coach Rex Ryan will give Sanchez a better opportunity tomorrow against the Giants as he has stated the starters will play the entire first half.
San Francisco 49ers vs Houston Texans (-3): This potential Super Bowl preview features two of the top defenses in the league and both units picked up where they left off in last week’s preseason openers. The Texans held Carolina to 12 first downs and 137 yards in a 26-13 win while the 49ers topped Minnesota 17-6 after limiting the Vikings to 12 first downs and 208 total yards. Despite producing just 17 points, San Francisco’s offense also showed well, racking up 23 first downs and 412 yards. Alex Smith completed 3-of-3 passes for 16 yards and a touchdown, and his back up, second year pro Colin Kaepernick, connected on 5-of-9 passes for 40 yards and he had three carries for 92 yards and one touchdown.
