Week 2 NFL preseason action rambles on tonight with a six game slate that features two NFL Network contests. The second of those broadcasts features the Cowboys taking on the Chargers in San Diego. Kickoff in the Dallas/San Diego tussle is scheduled for 9:00pm ET at Qualcomm Stadium; NFL Odds have the Chargers listed as a -3 against the spread favorite. Another intriguing battle on this evening’s docket features a Show Me State Showdown between the Chiefs and Rams at the Edward Jones Dome. The line in the Kansas City/St. Louis dust up is presently set at +/-1 with the home team getting the point.
Kansas City Chiefs vs St. Louis Rams (+1): These two teams could not have looked more different in their preseason openers as the Chiefs hammered the Cardinals 27-17 at Arrowhead Stadium and the Rams got thrashed 38-3 by the Colts in Indianapolis. Sam Bradford posted acceptable numbers in the loss, completing 7-of-9 passes for 57 yards, but St. Louis’ defense, which figures to be the team’s strength under new head coach Jeff Fisher, yielded 23 first downs and 430 yards to Andrew Luck and the Colts offense. The Chiefs, meanwhile, ran roughshod over Arizona, building a 14-0 lead in the opening frame. Matt Cassel, who missed the last month of the 2011 season with a hand injury, completed 5-of-6 passes for 67 yards and one touchdown. Newcomers Peyton Hillis (free agent signing) and Cyrus Gray (rookie – Texas A&M) had big nights as well. Hillis rushed for 41 yards on four carries and he was on the receiving end of Cassel’s scoring toss; Gray tallied 65 yards and one touchdown on 15 carries in his NFL debut. Kansas City has historically shown little regard for the preseason, but after the way it started last season under Todd Haley, it would appear new front man Romeo Crennel is putting a little more emphasis on exhibition play.
Dallas Cowboys vs San Diego Chargers (-3): The Chargers looked sharp in their preseason opener, topping the Packers 21-13 last Thursday in San Diego. The same could not be said for Dallas, which prevailed 3-0 over the Raiders on Monday night in Oakland. The Cowboys, who did not score until the third quarter, produced 11 first downs and 202 total yards while going 2-for-10 on third down. Tony Romo completed 3-of-6 passes for 30 yards and tight end Jason Witten, after catching two passes for six yards, suffered an injury to his spleen that could have him sidelined until the regular season opener or possibly longer. Suffice to say the Pokes are hoping for a better performance this evening, and head coach Jason Garrett has indicated he may play Romo and the first team offense a little longer tonight if need be.
