Playing out the string usually refers to a losing team sleeping walking its way through the end of its regular season schedule, but the last week of preseason football must have that sort of feel to it as well. Most NFL squads are, no doubt, anxious to put exhibition play in the rear view mirror and move on to bigger and better things. They are not alone in their sentiment as fans and bettors too are pining for something that counts. But alas, one more week of preseason football must find make its way into the history books before the real action can begin. This week’s slate gets underway with three Wednesday games and it will conclude with 13 games on Thursday, August 30th. Three games will be broadcast live on the NFL Network, starting with Wednesday’s meeting between the Patriots and Giants at Metlife Stadium. Thursday’s night cap between the Broncos and Cardinals will serve as the network’s final exhibition broadcast. The latest NFL Odds have New England and Arizona listed as -2 and -2.5 against the spread favorites, respectively, in those two contests.
New England Patriots vs New York Giants (+2): It is a Super Bowl rematch of not so super proportions. The final preseason game matters little to the starters, there are no game plans, usually, and it mostly serves for the coaching staff to decide on final roster cuts. And that should be the case on Wednesday night in New York. This contest has a bit of a different component to it, though. New England and New York have squared off in the final preseason game for a number of years and the Patriots are 2-5 in this exhibition rivalry since 2005. The Patriots, a +500 NFL Picks favorite to win Super Bowl XLVII, are 0-3 at New York during that stretch, losing to the Giants by an average of 5.3 points per game. Expect more of the same tomorrow night as Bill Belichick has never seemed to emphasize winning the final preseason game.
