The final week of exhibition action gets underway this evening with a 7:00pm ET showdown between the Patriots and Giants on the NFL Network. It continues tomorrow night with 13 games as the league spends the weekend looking ahead to games that actually mean something. Two teams with opposing expectations for the regular season will tangle tomorrow at EverBank Field in Jacksonville as the Falcons are a favorite to make the playoffs while the Jaguars are considered a contender for the AFC South cellar. The latest NFL Odds for Thursday night’s meeting between Atlanta and Jacksonville has the host team listed as a -3 against the spread favorite.
Atlanta Falcons vs Jacksonville Jaguars (-3): Jacksonville, despite the holdout of Maurice Jones-Drew, had a good thing going early in the preseason, knocking off the Giants and Saints, but that all changed after last week’s regular season dress rehearsal against the Ravens. Second year quarterback Blaine Gabbert, after a great outing against New Orleans, completed 11-of-21 passes for 117 yards en route to a 68.9 quarterback rating. But the performance of the Jaguars defense opposite Joe Flacco and company was far more disconcerting than the lackluster offensive showing. Jacksonville, which is favored to win Over 5 games (-125) in the latest NFL Picks, yielded 32 first downs and 571 yards of offense as Joe Flacco and Tyrod Taylor combined to throw for 405 yards and four touchdowns. The Jags are charged with grounding the Falcons high flying offense this week, but fortunately for Jacksonville, Atlanta may clip its own wings. Matt Ryan and his cohorts brought the heat last week, thumping Miami 23-6 at Sun Life Stadium. Ryan threw for 220 yards and one touchdown on 26 attempts while Julio Jones caught four passes for 90 yards. Head Coach Mike Smith has probably seen enough from his first stringers that he will give them a break tonight. Jacksonville Head Coach Mike Mularkey, conversely, may want to see a little more out of Gabbert and his fellow starters, though.
