2013 NFL Picks Week 1

bills ej manuelWhen discussing the Buffalo Bills it would be inaccurate to say there is trouble in paradise as the franchise has more closely resembled Hamlet’s Denmark for the better part of the last 13 years. It would, however, be accurate to say the team has some serious problems as it heads into the regular season. Buffalo opened as a +7.5 2013 NFL Picks Week 1 home underdog against the defending AFC East champion Patriots, but the latest NFL Odds from Sportsbook.ag have New England laying 11.5 points in the season opening divisional battle. The massive line adjustment came after the snake bit Bills saw their top two quarterbacks go down in the preseason.

New England Patriots vs Buffalo Bills (+11.5, Over/Under 48.5): The schedule makers hardly did new Bills head coach Doug Marrone any favors when they set up a week one clash with the Patriots; however, with two meetings between the two teams an inevitability, Buffalo’s best chance at scoring a win over New England may be in its season/home opener. The Bills certainly looked like a potential party crasher after two weeks of preseason action. Rookie quarterback E.J. Manuel, the Bills surprise first round draft choice, performed exceptionally in leading Buffalo to wins over the Colts and Vikings. Manuel compiled a 114.56 passer rating after completing 26-of-33 passes for 199 yards and two touchdowns while Buffalo racked up 49 first downs and 831 yards of offense. Manuel underwent a minor knee surgery after the Minnesota game, though, and his status for the season opener was put in jeopardy. At that point Marrone still had a viable option with veteran Kevin Kolb, who was battling Manuel for the top spot, waiting in the wings. Kolb, though, suffered a serious concussion in the Bills third preseason game, which could signal the end to his rather short and injury plagued career. Those development led Buffalo to sign Matt Leinart and trade for Thaddeus Lewis, but with both players still learning the offense, Marrone indicated undrafted free agent rookie quarterback Jeff Tuel would start the season opener against New England. Goodbye 7.5, hello 11.5. Nonetheless, Manuel may still get the start and if he does, the line is certain to shrink closer to its original 7.5 mark. So if one were to fancy the Bills against the number in this match up there is no better time than now to jump on their sparsely populated bandwagon.
