Early 2013 Super Bowl Predictions

by Tyler Morgan on Monday, September 3rd, 2012

patriots brady lombardiAnother season of NFL action gets started on Wednesday when the Dallas Cowboys and New York Giants officially kickoff week one with a divisional battle at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. While football fans everywhere love the regular season and all the excitement (and wagering opportunities) it brings, it is almost impossible for the mind not to amble its way to next February and the crowning of a new Super Bowl champion. Sportsbook.ag has catered to, if not facilitated, these inevitable championship musings with the release of its 2013 Super Bowl Odds. Not surprisingly, the New England Patriots, a perennial playoff contender, are a +500 moneyline favorite to win the Lombardi Trophy. The Green Bay Packers are a second pick, drawing +600 odds to win Super Bowl XLVII, which will take place at the Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana on February 3rd, 2013.

Tyler Morgan’s  Super Bowl Pick:

New England Patriots (+500): No team in the league, with the exception of maybe the Packers and Saints, has as many offensive weapons as New England. The Patriots do not possess a host of big name wide receivers, but they have a highly productive group that includes Wes Welker and Brandon Lloyd. There is no question, though, that New England has the best and deepest tight end corps in the NFL…Rob Gronkowski, Aaron Hernandez, Jake Ballard, Visanthe Shiancoe, etc. Suffice it to say Tom Brady, who is, arguably, the league’s best quarterback, has no shortage of targets. This team is  indefensible when Brady has time to throw the ball, and sometimes even when he does not. The Patriots have their weaknesses on defense (yielded an average of 411 yards per game last season), but they are solid in the red zone, as evidenced by the modest 21.4 points per game they allowed in 2011. New England can also pressure the quarterback as it registered 40 sacks last year (51 counting the playoffs). Are their challengers to the Patriots in the AFC? Certainly, but few clubs from the conference look as dominant as New England, and that includes longtime stalwarts Pittsburgh and Baltimore. Denver could pose a threat as well, but Peyton Manning, with a few exceptions, has always had difficulty escaping the Pats’ shadow come playoff time.

The two biggest potential Super Bowl match-up nightmares for the Patriots are the Giants and 49ers. The Giants defensive line, when healthy, has proven to be kryptonite to the Pats vaunted offense. The Niners lock-down defense could produce similar effects on the Pats and Brady, but teams like Philadelphia, New Orleans, and Green Bay (all highly thought of teams in the latest Super Bowl Predictions) would probably end up in shoot-out type games with New England. Would those teams have an opportunity to win such a game? Yes, but the Giants approach has produced better results.
