The Washington Redskins play their home opener, Sunday Sept 23rd, against the Cincinnati Bengals as the Redskins try to continue to extend their home win streak to three in a row. The Bengals won their last meeting 20-013, at home, but this was back in 2008, pre-RGIII era. The latest NFL Week 3 Picks have the Redskins as -3.5 point home favorites against the spread with the game total set at 49 points. We recommend you compare NFL Betting Odds on the Bengals vs Redskins Line.
Cincinnati (1-1) got a 34-27 home victory in their one-sided rivalry in Week 2. Adam “Pacman” Jones returned the Cleveland Browns’ first punt 81 yards for a touchdown, and QB Andy Dalton matched his career high with three touchdown passes. Jones got his fifth career punt return for a touchdown.
The yardage and points that the Bengals defense has given up in the first two games is nearly unprecedented. It’s also numbers that Mike Zimmer has rarely seen in his 13 years as a defensive coordinator. After giving up 439 yards in Sunday’s 34-27 win over Cleveland, the Bengals have allowed their first two opponents to gain over 400 yards, which is the first time that has happened since 1991 and only the second time since 1981.
The 617 net passing yards are the most they have ever allowed in the first two games to start a season, surpassing the 601 they gave up in 1991. Last year they allowed only 601 total yards in that span. The 71 points is the second worst allowed by a Zimmer defense. The most is 73 by the 2000 Dallas Cowboys. Of the 120 defensive plays, 37 have gone for 10 yards or more, including 12 that have been for 20 or more yards. The Bengals defense had better get their defense in order against the Redskins talented quarterback.
Washington (1-1) suffered a 28-31 loss in St.Louis last week. QB Robert Griffin ran for two touchdowns and passed for a third for Washington, while Leonard Hankerson had two catches for 68 yards with a touchdown. Griffin led the Redskins to a 21-6 lead, but the Rams came back.
The Skins have a defense that even with Brian Orakpo and Adam Carriker has now given up 31 points or more in six of their last seven games. Now, outside linebacker Brian Orakpo and defensive end Adam Carriker are finished for the year after being injured last week. The losses of Orakpo and Carriker mean the Redskins could be without four defensive starters Sunday. Their defense gave up 30 points and had virtually no chance of being competitive, much less winning. They lost their last four games at the end of last year where the defense gave up over 30 points by an average of 10 points. This year, the defensive has given up 32 and 31 points and they are 1-1 with an eight-point win and a three-point loss.
If you have a quarterback, you have a chance. If you have a very good quarterback who displays flashes of greatness very early in his career, you have a good chance of staying competitive in almost every game.
