Tonight’s Monday Night Football game features a divisional clash between the Falcons and Saints at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in Louisiana (8:30pm ET). In spite of New Orleans 0-2 start, Drew Brees and his cohorts are a -3 ESPN Monday Night Football pick against the spread home favorite according to the latest NFL Odds from offshore bookmaker Bovada.lv. The total in this evening’s NFC South clash is set at 54 points.
There were no grand prognostications for the Saints this season, but most people, including the odds makers, felt they would have at least one win headed into tonight’s meeting with Atlanta. That, however, is not the case as New Orleans dropped its home/season opener 34-35 to the Raiders and it fell 13-16 on the road in its Week 2 clash with the Giants.
Per usual, the offense was not really the issue in either setback with the Saints presently second in yards per game with a 397.5 average. And Brees has completed over 66 percent of his passes for 686 yards and five touchdowns (zero interceptions). New Orleans defense, though, is the second worst in the league in terms over yards per game allowed (451.5).
The Falcons defense has fared even worse, allowing 412.5 yards and 29.5 points per game. But Atlanta’s offense ranks first in the NFL in yards per game (451) and second in points per contest (29.5).
The Dirty Birds were especially effective in last weekend’s 35-28 road dog win at Oakland. Matt Ryan threw for 396 yards and three touchdowns and Atlanta finished the game with 528 total yards and an 8.2 yards per play average.
Those numbers would point to another high scoring game tonight with two high powered offenses facing defenses that are leaky at best. However, only one time in the last six meetings between the Falcons and Saints has the game total gone over tonight’s 54 point line.
This evening also finds the Falcons looking to snap a two game skid against the Saints, who scored 31-21 and 20-17 wins over Atlanta last season.
New Orleans Saints Betting Trend: The Saints are 15-2 straight up and 14-3 against the spread since January of 2010 when playing as a home favorite coming off a road loss.
Atlanta Falcons Betting Trend: The Falcons are 1-10 straight up and 3-7-1 against the spread in their last 11 games playing as a road dog against a divisional foe when coming off a road game.
