The 1-3 Atlanta Falcons will look to get things turned around tonight as they welcome the New York Jets to the Peach State for a ESPN Monday Night Football showdown at the Georgia Dome. This evening’s inter-conference clash between the Jets and Falcons is scheduled to get underway at 8:30pm ET. The latest Jets vs Falcons Odds have Atlanta listed as a -9.5 pick against the spread favorite and the Over/Under set at 44 points. The Falcons are a -480 NFL Odds money line selection while New York is drawing a +390 line to win its third game of the season.
The Falcons opened the season with Super Bowl aspirations, but if they are unable to get a win over the Jets tonight a Wild Card spot in the playoffs may be wishful thinking. Atlanta is 1-3 at the quarter pole and it has suffered rare back to back losses entering this evening’s game.
Following their week two 31-24 win over the Rams, the Falcons dropped a game in Miami 23-27 despite outplaying the Dolphins. Matt Ryan and company had 24 first downs and 377 total yards while the Fins managed 16 and 285, respectively. Atlanta returned home following its South Florida setback to face the Patriots at the Georgia Dome. The Falcons faltered again, losing 30-23 to New England thanks to a 1-for-6 effort in the red zone.
It is clear from watching the Falcons play that there are some issues, particularly on the defensive side of the ball; however, they do not look like a 1-3 team. Frankly, it would shocking if they fall to 1-4 given the offensive troubles New York has experienced this season.
At 2-2 the Jets own a better record than Atlanta, but they have not played better than the Falcons. Rookie quarterback Geno Smith has done some nice things, especially in New York’s week two loss at New England, but his ball security has been disastrous. The Jets are presently 30th in the league in turnover margin at -10 and Smith, who has tossed eight picks in his first four NFL starts, is the main reason for their poor standings.
New York’s defense has played well this season and it may perform admirably tonight, but the Falcons, who have enjoyed one of the better home field advantages in all of football over the past few seasons, are desperate.
Notable Trends: Since the 2008 season the Falcons are 6-1 straight up and 5-1-1 against the spread when coming off a home loss.
