NFL Week 8 Predictions on Panthers vs Bears Spread

by Scott Burgess on Friday, October 26th, 2012

The red hot Chicago Bears take on the visiting Carolina Panthers, Sunday Oct 28th, as the Bears look to keep their perfect 3-0 home record intact and the Panthers try for their first road win. The Bears are on a four game win streak, while the Panthers are just the opposite. The Bears have won their last two meetings over the Panthers and it’s looking like a third, as the latest NFL Betting Odds have the Bears as -7.5 point home favorites against the spread with the game total set at 43 points.

Carolina (1-5, 0-2 V) lost to the Dallas Cowboys 14-19, at home, in Week 7. QB Cam Newton finished 21 of 37 for 233 yards with one touchdown and an early interception in the red zone, while WR Steve Smith made seven catches for 83 yards. For the Panthers it was another case of being close enough to win in the fourth quarter but being unable to finish. They had similar chances in its two previous games against the Atlanta Falcons and Seattle Seahawks.

The Carolina Panthers are the 13th ranked running team in the NFL, stunningly. Despite their inability to run with regularity out of the read-option, they’re still getting yards. However, this is largely due to Cam Newton. The running backs are pairing for 53 yards per game, and are having almost no impact.

Chicago has excelled by mercilessly punishing any foolish quarterback who dares to place the ball in bad spots. They have a stunning 14 interceptions on the year, and have taken back five for touchdowns. Cam Newton will be under pressure all day long– a by-product of a battered, bruised, and struggling offensive line.

Chicago (5-1, 3-0 H) won their fourth consecutive game by beating the Detroit Lions 13-7, at home, last Monday night. QB Jay Cutler completed 16 of 31 passes for 150 yards with one touchdown to WR Brandon Marshall, who made six catches for 81 yards. RB Matt Forte had 22 carries for 96 yards. Once again the Bears O-line allowed Cutler to get sacked five times.

The Bears defense is so good at stopping the run they’re only allowing 71.3 yards per game, second best in the NFL. Pair this with their athleticism at defensive end and linebacker, and you have a situation where Chicago can diffuse Newton’s ability on the run. It will take a small miracle for Carolina to move the ball on the ground.
