The Vikings and Bears cap off Week 8 NFL action with an ESPN Monday Night Football scrap at Soldier Field. Minnesota is chasing its sixth win of the season while Chicago is looking to avoid a 1-7 start. Bovada’s latest NFL odds have the Vikings listed as a -5 pick against the spread road favorite and the Over/Under set at 40.5 points.
The Vikings own the league’s best defense, allowing just 279.5 yards and 14 points per game, but it did not help them last Sunday nor did a week of rest. Minnesota made the trek to Philadelphia and it was upended 21-10 in suffering its first loss of the season.
The Eagles managed just 15 first downs and 239 total yards, but the Vikings leaky offensive line yielded six sacks, which led both directly and indirectly to four turnovers (one interception and three fumbles).
Minnesota’s line issues are not going away anytime soon, but fortunately for Sam Bradford and company, the Bears are not the Eagles.
Chicago’s defense has played reasonably well and its offense is producing a serviceable 348.6 yards per game, but the team is averaging a paltry 15.9 points per contest while giving up 24.1 points per game. That discrepancy explains Chicago’s 1-6 record.
Of course, anything can happen in the NFL, especially in division play, but that is not trending well for the Bears either. Chicago is 5-15 straight up and 7-13 against the spread in its last 20 division games and it has three straight and four of its last five to Minnesota.
Making matters worse for John Fox’s crew is just how well the Vikings have played coming off a loss since Mike Zimmer took over as head coach. Minnesota is 8-6 straight up and 11-3 against the spread on his watch following a loss and when playing as a favorite in said situation it is 5-0 straight up and 4-1 opposite the number.
Monday Night Football Betting Trend: Teams playing as a Monday night road favorite coming off a loss are 7-0 straight up and 5-2 against the spread since December of 2011.
