Amarillo Slim, christened Thomas Austin Preston Jr., was born on December 31,1928 in Johnson, Arkansas.  Amarillo Slim, Doyle Brunson and Sailor Roberts were rounders that traveled far and wide in the United States looking for a cash betting poker game.  These were tense times in the poker world, as the general public did not hold a poker player in high esteem.Poker vagabonds like Amarillo were considered unsavory characters at that time before poker became what it is today. One of Amarillo Slim’s best friends was Benny Binion, the owner of a Las Vegas casino and founder of the WSOP.  This friendship brought to fruition the WSOP that started small with just a few players and grew to what it has become today.

In 1972, Amarillo Slim won the main event.  At the present time he has won four WSOP poker bracelets, with two of them won in the Omaha event.  As of 2008, his tournament wins total $590,000.  In 1992 Amarillo Slim was inducted into the Poker Hall of Fame.

Amarillo’s poker fame allowed him to begin hosting the Super Bowl of Poker, which began in 1980 and ran every year until 1990.  During its run, Stu Unger won the betting tournament three times.  Poker has provided Amarillo Slim a lifetime of thrills and defeats and his story is about to become a movie with Nicolas Cage slated to play the affable poker player.

His Poker Fame has made him a household name, which was enhanced by his many appearances on long running TV shows and a small part in the movie California Split.  His appearance on I’ve Got A Secret was the result of him losing $190,000 in one night of poker.  Amarillo has made a lot of money from betting on poker and he has been robbed and shot at. Slim has legendary life stories that are the stuff of poker mythology.
