Johnny Moss was a legend in poker long before his death on December 16, 1995. He was born in Marshall, Texas on May 14, 1907. He started playing poker as a boy, steadily growing into the legendary player he became as an adult. He was an original rounder and traveled all over the United States in search of cash poker games. When Benny Binion decided to push poker he got Johnny Moss and Nick the Greek Dandalos to play heads up poker in the front area of his casino.  This marathon game lasted five months until Dandalos stood up and said, ”Mr. Moss, I guess I will have to let you go”. Johnny Moss won three of the first five WSOP main events and during his long-playing career won nine of the WSOP tournaments. He was one of the first inductees into the Poker Hall of Fame. Moss was not adverse to also playing golf for large sums of money. There is one story that circulated that in one such golf round he was down about a quarter of million dollars and his mob backers were discussing maybe just killing his opponent rather than pay up his winnings. Luckily for the player Moss staged a big comeback and they finished with Moss just slightly down. Moss’s opponent said that Moss was lucky to make such a comeback. Moss told him that he was the lucky one, not me. Such was the life of a gambler in the early days of Las Vegas.

Although he was losing his health at the end of his playing days, he lit up like a neon sign when he sat down to play poker. Doyle Brunson said that he learned to play watching Johnny Moss play. Many old time poker players credit Moss for their game of skill to this day. If Moss were around today you can bet that he would be at the final table with is friend Doyle in this year's WSOP 2008.
