With his second-place and $150,000 in graded earnings and Blue Grass-G1 finish almost a week ago, Paddy O’Prado was able to earn himself a spot in the 2010 Kentucky Derby in which I’m sure pleased owner Donegal Racing. However, many are speculating that this colt won’t be able to handle the additional furlong of the first leg of the Triple Crown as he packed it in quickly inside the final furlong of the 1 1/8-mile Blue Grass race.
Coming in at 25 to 1 odds, Paddy O’Prado is known for being a turf horse with a pedigree of turfers but has seemed to have gotten a good late start with his runner up finish being on sand at the Blue Grass. His last win came in the Palm Beach-G3 out of Gulfstream Park in Florida with jockey Jesus Castanon back in March. We’ll see if trainer Dale Romans has gotten this colt up to par and ready for the Kentucky Derby. He seemed to have been impressed with the Blue Grass race when he stated, "He seemed to handle the surface real well."
