Arriving into Churchill Downs this past Tuesday, Santa Anita Derby-G1 1st place finisher Sidney’s Candy is hoping to please owners Sid and Jenny Craig Trust at least in the first leg of the Triple Crown. Being introduced in late July this 3 year old colt came in with a strong 2nd in the MSW at the Del Mar and grew stronger from there. August started the winning streak for Sidney’s Candy in the MSW at Del Mar and after the win trainer John Sadler gave this thoroughbred a break.
“He had an absolutely perfect trip,” jockey Joe Talamo said after the San Vincente Stakes. “John and I talked this morning. That was our plan – try to get to the lead, get him relaxed, and kick home. In the last part, he was kind of cruising.”
Febuary 2010 was the start of a good year with the first win coming in the San Vicente-G2, March presented another 1st place finish at the San Felipe-G2, and lastly finishing 1st in the Santa Anita Derby-G1 all in Santa Anita Park, CA with jockey Joe Talamo. Coming from a seemingly good pedigree, we’ll see if Kentucky bred Sidney’s Candy can come out on top in the race of all races.
Joe Talamo added, “After the wire, when horses came to him, he kicked again. To go from a seven-eighths sprint to a mile and a sixteenth and relax like that, he's mature.”
