Northern Giant was listed at 100 to 1 odds to win the 2010 Kentucky Derby just can’t seem to get it together when it comes to getting a 1st place finish. He ended 2009 with a 2nd place finish in the MSW as well as added two 3rd place spots in early 2010 at the MSW and the Risen Star-G2 all out of the Fair Grounds Race Course in New Orleans.
“Northern Giant may have fooled us a bit. His tank may not have been as full as we thought,” said trainer Wayne Lukas’ assistant Will Van Meter on Northern Giant’s performance at the April Arkansas Derby. “How he was eating and training, we thought he would have had more energy. But he handled everything well and may well be on the undercard at the Preakness ([G1] at Pimlico on May 15)."
March added another 2nd place finish for Northern Giant at the Lane’s End-G2 out of Turfway Park in Kentucky with jockey Calvin Borel. This Kentucky bred colt didn’t have such luck in the Arkansas Derby-G1 with jockey Victor Espinoza where he finished 9th. We’ll have to see where this one will go from here.
