Kettle River showed much promise to trainer Eoin Harty early January when he won the Allowance Race at the Santa Anita. Unfortunately, he couldn’t match it when he raced early March in the Sham-G3 in which he was going to skip until he received word that it would be delayed a week due to flooding on the track. Harty did say that the colt was under the weather and that contributed to his poor performance. He also admitted that he held Kettle River out of the Turfway Park’s Lane’s End for the Lexington because he thought it would be an easier spot.
“He'd gotten sick in a work, spiked a temperature and I had to treat him with antibiotics,” Eoin Harty said of Kettle River’s race during the Sham-G3. “…I think that set him back. He was never the same after that until just recently. If he'd gotten through his early prep races without getting sick and being treated, I think I might possibly be looking at the Derby.”
Kettle River is the son of Congaree who has had an impressive track record between 2001 and 2003. Congaree has two 3rd place finishes at the 2001 Triple Cown in the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness. Lets just hope he’ll be able to live up to that at the 2010 Triple Crown.
“There's no shame in winning a $300,000 Derby prep and be scouting around the country (for other spots) and having that horse possibly develop into a Travers horse,” Eoin Harty further stated, referring to Saratoga's premier stakes for 3-year-olds.
