Backtalk who’s coming in at 50 to 1 odds made his 2010 start in a good way with a 1st place win in the Sportsman’s Paradise Stakes out of the Delta Downs in Louisiana. His last race resulted in a 3rd place finish in the Illinois Derby-G3 out of Hawthorne Race Course both races with jockey M Mena. However, his total graded stakes earning for 2009 and 2010 has gotten him $225,916, which falls just short of placing in the top 20 graded stakes earners. So does this mean Backtalk is out?
"He has been on schedule all along," said Todd Quast, racing manager for Gold Mark. "The only miss was the 1:09 and 3 (six-furlong) work before the Illinois Derby. It is just hard to believe that $225,000 may not get us in."
With great pedigree running through his blood, Backtalk has a lot to live up to with his dad getting through 2003 & 2004 with all but one 1st place finishes. Smarty Jones had his own success in the Triple Crown when he finished 1st in both the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness-G1 and then finished 2nd in the last leg at the Belmont Stakes-G1. With the bloodlines not stopping there, Backtalk’s grandfather on his mom’s side, Affirmed had nothing but 1st place finishes between 1978 & 1979 with three of those being in the 1978 Triple Crown. But sitting at 22nd on the graded earnings, will Backtalk even get the chance at all three races? Trainer Tom Amoss is being very positive on the situation.
"It was an easy five-eighths, which is what we wanted," Tom Amoss said of the move, the colt's first since a third-place finish in the April 3 Illinois Derby (G3). "Everything has been fine with him since the Illinois Derby, no problems at all. He will work again next Sunday — something a little more spirited at that time."
