Even though the Run for the Roses has concluded to be out of reach for Alphie’s Bet, the $200,000 TVG Snow Chief Stakes has accepted this California bred horse with open arms. Ridden by former jockey Mike Smith, Alphie’s Bet will break from post 2 and trainer Alexis Barba has high hopes that the colt will do well as the April 24th Snow Chief is the same distance as his last win in the Sham-G3.
Alphie’s Bet seems to have been a late bloomer but didn’t end 2009 at a complete loss. The colt brought in two 4th place finishes both in the MSW at Hollywood Park in California. He then came in 2nd at the end of the year at CA Brd Champ but made a difference when he came in 1st in January of 2010 in the MSW out of Santa Anita Park. We’ll have to see what progress he makes coming up in the Snow Chief and then see what he can accomplish towards both the Preakness and the Belmont Stakes-G1.
