Owned by WinStar Farms and Kentucky bred, American Lion who’s coming in at 18 to 1 odds will be ridden by jockey David Flores on May 1st. Trainer Eoin Harty has already put the horse to work and the colt completed five furlongs in 1:01.80 before he headed to Churchill Downs.
"Everything went well," said Eoin Harty, who said American Lion worked by himself. "I'm very happy with him. He's doing as well as I could hope for. He's always done well. The only thing he wasn't doing well before was winning."
Coming from a great pedigree, American Lion’s dad, Tiznow started out with a 6th place finish at the beginning of his career but brought in 1st – 3rd place finishes after that between 2000 & 2001. His mom, Storm Tide only raced in one race but took home the win back in 2002. American Lion hasn’t done too badly for himself as well with 1st place finishes in the MSW October of ’09, the Hollywood Prevue-G3 in November ’09, and just recently in the Illinois Derby-G3 out of Hawthorne Race Course.
