After winning the March 26th Allowance race out of Santa Anita, Distorted Dave was listed as one of the favorites for the Coolmore Lexington Stakes out of Keeneland. However, high hopes fell short when the colt finished 7th. Even if he had won, his total graded stakes earnings wouldn’t have been enough for him to compete in the first leg of the Triple Crown.
Distorted Dave ran really well in that last race, and we just thought the Lexington would be a logical next spot for him," said trainer John Sadler before the Coolmore Lexington Stakes. "We haven't really looked past this race for him."
I’m sure Distorted Dave owner Stephen Johnson – Highfield Stock Farm had hopes of seeing his colt make it to the Kentucky Derby but it looks like he’ll have to start to concentrate on the other two races after the Derby. Distorted Dave’s (Distorted Humor – Crazy Ensign by Firery Ensign) grandfather – Forty Niner had his chance in the 1988 Kentucky Derby where he place 2nd but didn’t do as good with only a 7th place finish in the Preakness Stakes.
