Coming in as the odds favorite for the Arkansas Derby-G1 earlier this month, Super Saver will need to step it up as he finished 2nd in that race. He’s coming in at 15 to 1 odds for the 2010 Kentucky Derby and the race will have some major contenders. Another WinStar Farms owned horse and also trained by Todd Pletcher, Super Saver’s (Maria’s Mon – Supercharger by A.P. Indy) grandfather was Horse of the Year and 1992 Belmont Stakes winner.
“This is the race everybody wants to win, but it can be the most elusive,” owner Bill Casner said. “The stars have to be crossed, you have to have the horse and you have to have a tremendous amount of luck.”
Super Saver will be returning to the track that brought him his most important win of his career – the Churchill Downs’ Kentucky Jockey Club –G2 last November. Since then, he’s been having some trouble getting back to a win but did close out the Tamp Bay Derby-G3 with a 3rd place finish and his most recent 2nd place finish. Arkansas Derby jockey Calvin Borel will be riding him again for the first leg of the Triple Crown. Super Saver’s graded stakes earnings total up to all most $364K and KentuckyDerby.com stated, “Super Saver should have no problem with staying the distance in the Derby.”
