With the biggest event in horse racing the set go off this Saturday May 3rd, a couple of top 2008 Kentucky Derby favorites, Pyro and Colonel John have been making some noise among the horse racing sharps with their workouts this week at Churchill Downs.

Colonel John, listed as one of the top 5 2008 Kentucky Derby favorites had an impressive workout on Sunday running 5 furlongs at a fast 57.61 seconds on the dirt track at Churchill Downs. Colonel John has won an amazing 4 of his last 6 races but they were all done on artificial surfaces.

2008 Kentucky Derby Favorites: Pyro and Colonel John have impressive workoutsColonel John’s trainer Eoin Harty had this to say about his three-year old horses quick run: "The time was fast but I was happy with the way he did it. I was very pleased with the way he handled the track," said trainer Eoin Harty less than an hour after the work.

"The track was very fast this morning, Unnecessarily fast. At the moment it doesn't look like the work took a lot out of him. He got a good blow but he appears to be well back to himself. Fortunately we have plenty of time to play with between now and the Derby."

Another top-5 2008 Kentucky Derby favorites, Pyro ran for 4 furlongs on Monday at a nice 49.80 clip on a fast track. Pyro was expected to be the #1 2008 Kentucky Derby favorites but he has had some up and down performances that have caused the horses stock to drop heading into the 2008 Kentucky Derby. Even with some suspect runs Pyro finished 2nd in the Breeders Cup Juvenile and reeled off stellar wins in the Louisiana Derby and the Risen Star races. Pyro is listed at 8-1 betting odds which is a high number for a horse of his caliber.
