Kurt Busch of the Roger Penske racing team has been hard charging up the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series points race and after Sunday's performance at Talladega has edged past previous points leader Jeff Gordon of Rick Hendrick Motorsports. In nine starts, Busch has one win, three top five and six top ten finishes. Busch jumped up two spots in the points standings over Gordon and his Hendrick teammate and 2008 Sprint Cup points champion Jimmie Johnson.
Busch won the points championship in 2004 but finished out of the top-10 in three of the four years since winning the championship. Busch, formerly with owner Jack Roush, moved to the Penske team in 2006. Currently, Busch has 1299 points and is only leading Gordon with 1294 points by the slimist of margins, five points. Johnson with 1235 points only trails by 64 points while Tony Stewart of Stewart Hass racing with 1232 points only trails by 67.
