Coming in at 10 to 1 odds, Ice Box is being considered a late bloomer but earned his spot in the 136th Kentucky Derby by a nose after winning the Florida Derby-G1. He made his colt debut with a 1st place win in the Allowance at the beginning of 2010 in which gave him the chance for the Fountain of Youth-G2 resulting in a 5th place finish. With $457,500 in graded stakes earnings, Ice Box owner Robert LaPenta is happy to be returning back to the Run for the Roses.
ESPN.com is reporting, “Going on the premise that there will be a hot pace in this year's Derby, Ice Box should benefit if he can obtain a clear rallying path in this massive field. He is worthy of superfecta inclusion at the very least. Despite showing some prompting ability earlier in his career, when Ice Box reached the graded stakes level he became a pure one-run closer. Such a running style might be compromised by a 20-horse field, yet he seems mature enough to handle the task. The trouble is that he may be jammed up alongside others who also deliberately lag back before being cut loose for one late charge.”
Trainer Nick Zito will also be returning to the Kentucky Derby in 2010 because of Kentucky bred Ice Box (Pulpit – Spice Island by Tabasco Cat) along with Jackson Bend and has chosen jockey Jose Lezcano who brought in the Florida Derby win. Zito is hoping that the Panama born jockey can bring in a win again.
"Jose is a young kid (Panamanian is 25) but he reminds me so much of Braulio Baeza and he's got a little bit of Laffit Pincay Jr. in him," Nick Zito said of Ice Box’s chosen jockey. "I'm really high on this kid. I think he's got a great career ahead of him, to be one of the best jockeys around in the next couple of years."
